In 1923 objects and paintings were given to the City of Lancaster by the Storey Institute and a handful of private donors. These objects formed the foundation of the early museum collection and allowed the opening of Lancaster City Museum on 5 November 1923. This year the collection celebrates its hundredth birthday!

Throughout the centenary year, Lancaster City Museums has been celebrating what is today a much more extensive collection of around 70,000 objects (plus 30,000 belonging to the King’s Own Regiment Museum).

Over the year the museum team will have produced 100 podcasts called 100 Years, 100 Objects: stories from the museum collections. The podcasts feature local people, specialists and the museum team talking about their favourite objects from the collection. These can be found here. The items range from works of fine art to the personal diary of the infamous Lancaster Doctor, Buck Ruxton.

The year will end with a final grand exhibition called 100 Years, 100 Objects: your favourite object from the collections of Lancaster City Museums. In this exhibition, we have shortlisted 100 objects that represent the breadth of the collection. You can see all the objects and vote on your favourite.
